Large Dog Breed Health Risk Profiles

Quick answer: Every breed in this guide carries its own inherited risk pattern, not just "large dog problems" in general. German Shepherds

German Shepherds are one of the breeds most frequently cited for hip and elbow dysplasia — in one large dataset reviewed by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, close to a fifth of German Shepherds assessed showed signs of elbow dysplasia. Beyond joints, two conditions are worth knowing specifically:

  • Degenerative myelopathy (DM) — a progressive spinal cord disease that typically develops between 8–14 years old, starting with hind-leg weakness and loss of coordination. It's caused by a genetic mutation that can be tested for in breeding stock.
  • Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus, GDV) — German Shepherds have a deep chest, which puts them at higher risk of this sudden, life-threatening stomach twist. It's a genuine emergency: symptoms include a swollen abdomen, retching without producing anything, and restlessness.

Labrador Retriver

Labradors share the same hip and elbow dysplasia risk as most large breeds, but their single biggest health issue is entirely preventable: obesity. Labradors are prone to overeating, partly linked to a documented gene variant that increases food-seeking behaviour, and carrying excess weight accelerates joint disease, raises cancer risk, and shortens lifespan.

Two other breed-specific points worth knowing:

  • Exercise-induced collapse (EIC) — a genetic neuromuscular condition where a dog's hind legs weaken and it can collapse after intense exercise, usually starting around one year old. A DNA test can identify carriers.
  • Cancer — accounts for a meaningful share of Labrador deaths, with lymphoma, mast cell tumours and haemangiosarcoma among the most common types.

Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers carry the standard large-breed hip dysplasia risk, but the condition that defines this breed's health profile is cancer. The Morris Animal Foundation's long-running Golden Retriever Lifetime Study — one of the largest observational health studies of any dog breed — has found roughly 60–75% of study dogs' deaths were cancer-related, with haemangiosarcoma and lymphoma the most common types.

  • Haemangiosarcoma — a cancer of the blood vessel lining, often described as a "silent" disease because there are frequently no symptoms until a tumour ruptures. It's most common in the spleen and heart.
  • Lymphoma — estimated to affect around one in eight Golden Retrievers over their lifetime.

What owners can do: this isn't a condition a supplement or diet change can meaningfully prevent, so the most useful action is awareness — routine vet checks, prompt investigation of any new lumps or unexplained lethargy, and supporting overall health (joints, coat, digestion) through the conditions that are manageable. Rhodesian Ridgeback

The Ridgeback's defining breed-specific risk isn't orthopaedic — it's dermoid sinus, a congenital condition unique to breeds with the characteristic dorsal hair ridge. It's a tubular indentation in the skin along the spine that can run deep into underlying tissue; in its most serious form it can connect to the spinal cord and risk life-threatening infection. Reported prevalence in some Ridgeback populations has been estimated at 8–10%.

Ridgebacks are also disproportionately represented in some case-control studies of osteosarcoma (bone cancer) relative to crossbred dogs, alongside the usual large-breed hip dysplasia risk.

What owners can do: dermoid sinus is typically visible from birth or early puppyhood as an opening or swirl of hair along the midline of the back — reputable breeders check for it and it's surgically removable when found early. Weimaraner

Weimaraners are a deep-chested breed, which puts them at meaningfully elevated risk of bloat (GDV) — regarded by many Weimaraner-specific health resources as the breed's most serious and time-critical health concern. Two other points stand out:

  • Hypertrophic osteodystrophy (HOD) — a painful inflammatory bone disease that affects rapidly growing puppies, typically between 2–8 months old, causing swelling and pain in the long bones. Most puppies recover as they mature.
  • Hip dysplasia — present at a broadly similar rate to other large breeds.

  • Lymphedema — swelling caused by improper drainage of the lymphatic system, which PDSA lists among the breed's notable predispositions.
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) — an inherited, degenerative eye condition that eventually causes blindness; there's no cure, but it's not painful.

Doberman

The Doberman's risk profile looks quite different from the other breeds in this guide — hip dysplasia is present but reported at a comparatively lower rate (around 7% in some clinical estimates) than in German Shepherds or Labradors. Instead, the breed's defining health concerns are cardiac and haematological:

  • Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) — a disease of the heart muscle that causes progressive heart failure. UK-based veterinary welfare research (UFAW) has found the overall prevalence of DCM in European Dobermans now exceeds 50%. It often shows no obvious signs for years before sudden collapse or heart failure, which is why annual cardiac screening (echocardiogram and/or Holter monitoring) is widely recommended for Dobermans from around two years old.
  • Von Willebrand's disease (vWD) — an inherited blood clotting disorder; a large proportion of the breed carries the gene, and it's a significant consideration before any surgery.
  • Wobbler syndrome — spinal cord compression in the neck, typically presenting from middle age, that produces a distinctive unsteady gait.
